Super Rugby franchise of Argentina Rugby taking shape

The looming entry of Argentina Rugby into the fold of Super Rugby continues to move forward with the national team’s first five Nicolas Sanchez signing for the country’s franchise in the competition.

Sanchez, who already has collected 30 test caps for Argentina in international level, will move to the franchise from a lucrative contract in the French Top 14 where he currently plays for the reigning European champions Toulon.

The playmaking abilities of Sanchez will be a key factor that will determine the new outfit’s chances of remaining competitive in their first foray into the competition next season when the competition expands to 18 teams, taking in a first representative from Japan as well as another South African franchise.

Sanchez will join his Argentina Rugby teammates in the side which includes national team skipper and hooker Agustin Creevy and backline utility man Joaquin Tuculet, both of whom have committed themselves to the historic entry of the Argentine franchise in the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest provincial tournament.

After his move home was confirmed, Sanchez was asked whether he felt relieved after signing the contract, to which the player replied that he doesn’t know whether relief is the right word but he felt a mixture of emotions.

He added that he is taking what is coming with a great sense of responsibility and he is looking to make a mark on it as well, as he looks to help cement a place for Argentina Rugby in the top echelons of world rugby. Read more »
